Testing Your WIFI Connection

image.pngThe Testing Your WIFI Connection process guides users in diagnosing wireless network stability on Android handheld devices using a third-party application. Its primary purpose is to help identify signal drops and channel congestion that may disrupt real-time communication with the server. This article is intended for OPS-COM administrators and field enforcement staff.

Setup and Configuration

To accurately test your network connection, you must install a specific third-party diagnostic application on your Android handheld device.

Admin Side: No backend administrative setup is required.

  • Open

    Downloadthe Google Play Store on your Android handheld device.

  • Search for and download WifiAnalyzer (open-source) by VREM Software Group. This is a WIFIfree Analyzerutility Applicationapplication.

  • Using this Feature

    1. Open the WifiAnalyzer (OpenSource). It's a free downloadapplication on theyour Google Playstore.

    2. This app will give you a graphic representation of the signal strength. There are two screens we are interested in. One is Access Points and the other is Channel Graph. Both are available fromTap the hamburger Iconicon (three parallel lines) located at the top left of the app.screen

      Help with Troubleshooting WIFI

      This is something that would be great to lookview ata throughoutvisual therepresentation dayof channel congestion and especiallyoverlapping whennetwork you have these drops in signal. What we are looking for is how much it goes up and down through the day.signals.

    Visual Cues & Status Indicators

    • Signal Strength Graph: The signal strength is shownvisually represented as a  column of colourcolor rising up from the bottom of the graphgraph, thattypically rangesranging from minus-100 100dbdBm to minus-20 20db.dBm.

    • Reading dBm Values: Signal strength is measured in negative numbers. The smaller the numbernegative number, the higher (stronger) the signalsignal. (keepKeep in mind that thesea numbersvalue arecloser negativeto sozero (e.g., -10020 isdBm) indicates a much better signal than a lower number (e.g., -20)100 dBm).


    Best Practices & Considerations

    • ToMonitor bestsignal assistfluctuations throughout the day. It is highly recommended to check the app periodically, especially when drops in troubleshooting,signal weoccur. areObserving lookinghow formuch the readingsignal ofgoes howup lowand thedown dbcan numberhelp ispinpoint forexactly yourwhen WIFIconnectivity source.drops.

    • TheCheck secondchannel thingcongestion. wePay areclose lookingattention for isto how many devices or networks are broadcasting on the exact same channel.

      Too many devices trying to access on the same channel simultaneously will create interference and have ana severe adverse affecteffect on your connectivity strength.

    • Capture data for support. Please provide screen captures of theseboth itemsthe Access Points and Channel Graph screens when contacting OPS-COM support. Having a visual record of the exact dBm reading for your Wi-Fi source and the channel congestion allows the support team to assist you much more effectively.
